Urban Shield (2014 – 2019)

Oakland Privacy was an active participant in the Bay Area campaign to eliminate Urban Shield, a militarized policing and weapons expo put on annually by the Alameda County Sheriff.

Organized protests began at least as far back as 2013 (C.f. https://occupyoakland.org/event/urban-shield-day-of-protest/). In 2014 organized resistance succeeded in ‘kicking out’ Urban Shield from downtown Oakland, where it had been held at the Marriot Hotel in past years (C.f. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Oakland-will-not-host-Urban-Shield-next-year-5738774.php).

Victory was finally achieved in early 2019 when the Federal Government refused to fund Urban Shield under the conditions laid down by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors over the objections of Sheriff Ahern. (C.f. https://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/feds-cut-funding-for-urban-shield-after-supervisors-implement-reforms/Content?oid=25521940)

Oakland Privacy members participated in direct actions during this time period, we wrote multiple op-eds on the problems with Urban Shield, and engaged County and local legislators in multiple efforts to cancel the program or halt participation in it, respectively.
