Oakland Privacy Privacy Rights Fellowship 2025-2026

Oakland Privacy, founded in 2013, is an activist group devoted to fighting against both government and corporate surveillance and in defense of privacy rights and government transparency. We concentrate on state, regional and local matters, while advocating with other like-minded organizations at the national level.

We have obtained a grant to once again hire a part-time fellow to aid us in our work and help us expand its scope. The Privacy Rights Fellowship begins on March 1st, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter for a duration of one year. Compensation is $1250/month for 40-45 hours/month, paid quarterly.

This is a unique opportunity to do hands-on implementation of enhanced privacy rights and enact social change beyond research and white papers.

The work would be focused in the following areas:

● Artificial Intelligence Regulation

The fellow will coordinate input for ongoing artificial intelligence and algorithmic decision-making rulemaking- The fellow will also track and guide our responses to state-level legislation which has already or we know will be introduced in 2025. Lastly, the fellow will help develop targeted model local legislation focusing on AI performance auditing, algorithmic transparency and complaint/appeal processes, providing a laboratory for the political and implementation challenges accompanying larger-scale regulation.

● Digital Security

The fellow will update and expand our public awareness materials about keeping yourself safe online to meet the challenges of the second Trump administration. This would include research, analysis of the pros and cons of various options and brainstorming creative ways to present the information for audiences with varying levels of technical understanding.

You would work closely on these tasks with one or more of our experienced volunteers, experts in advocacy and privacy legislation, and knowledgeable about what is happening currently in AI.
